He started taking piano lessons at home at the age of thirteen, a short time later after his father inherits him an electric guitar in , he learned to play the guitar. At the age of 16, Gundersen found himself playing in local restaurants. And in his sister Abby , a cellist, violinist, pianist, and harmony singer, began to play with him. The duo began acting as a full band under the name Courage.

Later at the age of 18, Gundersen left his home to pursue a musical career and thus begin playing in bars around Seattle.

While still a teenager, Noah Gundersen formed his first band post-hardcore called Beneath Oceans in Along with a group of friends from his high school. Thanks to everyone who came to Hotel Cafe the last two nights. These shows were so special.

The yearning, acoustic folk of his first few releases, including debut album Ledges , gradually made way for electric guitar and synths, culminating in the arena-sized flourishes of his third studio album, 's White Noise.

Releases like 's Lover and 's A Pillar of Salt took on a more intimate demeanor. Born in Olympia in , Gundersen grew up in nearby Centralia with an extremely religious but also very musical family that frowned on secular music, a view that he eventually abandoned.

He began taking piano lessons before he was a teen, and after inheriting an electric Epiphone guitar from his father in , he started tracking songs on his father's recording equipment. The duo added a rhythm section and began performing as a full band under the name the Courage. Gundersen also formed the post-hardcore group Beneath Oceans in , but after finishing an unreleased EP, the band called it quits in and Gundersen resumed his solo career.

His first solo EP, 's Brand New World , was recorded in Eugene, Oregon in a home studio and featured plenty of his sister's playing and singing. A live album with the Courage , Live at the Triple Door , appeared the same year. The group served as his backing band as he performed songs from Brand New World at clubs and cafes around Washington state.

The band performed at the Sisters Folk Festival in both and and evolved further, recording their debut album, Fearful Bones, under the name The Courage in Early in his career, he began to perform in Seattle. He formed his first band called Beneath Oceans with a few friends from high school. He left home at 18 to further pursue his music career. While also performing and recording with The Courage, Gundersen remained focused on his solo career. A rough recording of the EP originally circulated, landing on the desk of producer Daniel Mendez, who mixed the EP for a full release.

Mendez then worked with Gundersen to release a follow-up EP, Family in The album addressed themes like faith, death, and past relationships. Tracks from the EP were later available online through the deluxe edition release of Ledges. Following up his breakthrough album Ledges, Gundersen returned to the studio to record his second LP, Carry the Ghost, which was released in The album deals with the challenges of success, failed relationships, religion, and sexuality.

Later in , Gundersen helped to produce the David Ramirez album Fables, which released on August Ranked on the list of most popular Folk Singer.
