Scott's inhuman, glossy style is fey and terse: postcards from Mount Olympus.

At least that's where "Gladiator" seems to take place — there or some other mythical area, since the Roman Colosseum is roughly the size of the Death Star from "Star Wars," thanks to the magic of computer graphics. With each scene composed for an audience's delectation of the constant slaughter, the movie is both pandering and detached. It's like a handsomely designed weapon: you can't take your eyes off it even though you may be repelled by its purpose.

The first battle, when the hero, Maximus, leads his troops against Germania, is full of Bruegelesque imagery.

Flaming arrows fly through the sky, resembling tracer shells from a World War II movie; a sword is left in the side of a tree, steam issuing from the warm blood dripping from its blade. After the battle, ashes drift from the sky like snowflakes.

And that is all in the first 10 minutes. Crowe has the keen, repressed rage of a man devoted to his flag, or of a movie star who doesn't have the patience for stupidity.

There have been numerous reports that the badly behaved Mr. Crowe turned the shooting of "Gladiator" into his own version of the Fall of the Roman Empire.

But his temperament gives the picture a center: Maximus looks as if he has a thousand things on his mind, most of them unpleasant. Yet his work isn't all glower. Even though he hasn't smiled in a movie since the underrated "Proof" in the early 's, Mr. Crowe is given to a hurt swallow when he's uncomfortable, and to a look of suffering in his eyes. Storyline Edit. Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius.

Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. The powerful general is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. The only desire that fuels him now is the chance to rise to the top so that he will be able to look into the eyes of the man who will feel his revenge.

Father of a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife and I shall have my vengeance in this life or the next. Rated R for intense, graphic combat. Did you know Edit. Trivia Maximus' description of his home--specifically, how the kitchen is arranged and smells in the morning and at night--was ad-libbed. It's a description of Russell Crowe 's own home in Australia. Goofs During the Battle of Carthage, Maximus frees a horse from the chariot and rides it.

The horse is wearing a saddle, which it wouldn't wear if it was pulling a chariot. Quotes Commodus : Rise. Connections Edited into Yoostar 2: In the Movies User reviews 2.

Top review. They said you were a giant. They said you can crush a man's skull with one hand. Ridley Scott's Gladiator is not a perfect film, I would think that the hardiest of fans, of which I'm firmly one, know this deep down. Yet just like Commodus in the film is keen to point out that he himself has other virtues that are worthy, so does Gladiator the film. Enough in fact to make it an everlasting favourite of genre fans and worthy of the Academy Award acknowledgements it received.

In narrative terms the plot and story arc is simplicity supreme, something Scott and Russell Crowe have never shied away from. Some folk seem very irritated by this, which is strange because the makers of Gladiator were not standing up bold as brass to proclaim they were unique with their movie, what they did do was reinvigorate a stagnant genre of film for a new generational audience. And it bloody worked, the influence and interest in all things Roman or historically swashbuckling of film that followed post Gladiator's success is there for all to see.

What we do in life echoes in eternity. So no originality in story, then. While some of the CGI is hardly "Grade A" stuff, and there's a little over - mugging acting in support ranks as some of the cast struggle to grasp the period setting required, yet the way Gladiator can make the emotionally committed feel - overrides film making irks.

Crowe's Maximus is the man men want to be and the man women want to be with. Parents, do not be afraid to let your mature young teens and even younger watch this and help explain to them, if they don't fully grasp it, the true honor that Maximus portrays and the code of "strength and honor" that he lives by and expects of others. A truly great movie.

Russell Crowe is a great actor you forget he's acting and the consummate hero which is so rare today.

This movie reminds me that there are things in life worth fighting for! Positive Messages. Adult Written by sidthekid January 31, T greatest of all time Gladiator is one of the greatest movies of all time. From the plot to the way it was shot. It is one of the only rated R movies that I would recommend to a middle schooler or high schooler. There isn't any inappropriate sex scenes or foul language. The movies plot is about a man named Maximus that was a leader of the Roman army and double crossed by the emperor's son who later becomes the Emperor of Rome.

The anger and Hate Maximus has for his enemy fuels him through may epic battles in the arena. The character Maximus played by Russell Crowe is played perfectly. His look and the way Russell portrays his hate sells the whole movie for me. The way the movie was shot from the CGI Coliseum to the costumes worn gave the movie a realistic feel.

The dramatic angles and editing made the fight scenes second to none in this movies genre. Gladiator is a movie that will be timeless. No doubt in my mind my children and their children will still be watching this movie. The awards this movie won could speak for themselves, but I recommend that you find out for yourself how great this movie is.

I rate this movie 10 out of Helped me decide. Had useful details 1. One of the Best Movies Ever!
